Hair transplant scarring and how we can help with Scalp Micropigmentation SMP.

by El Truchan London Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) Expert

When considering a hair transplant one question on many people's lips is, ‘will it leave a scar, and if so can this be camouflaged?’. The answer is yes!

Scar camouflage can be achieved through various processes we use here at Scalp Micro Definition, our award-winning Scalp Micropigmentation SMP Clinic in London. These are Scalp Micropigmentation SMP or Micropigmentation Skin Camouflage as well as a third option that is often suggested for recovery of the skin's own natural pigmentation and scar relaxation/ texture improvement called Microneedling. Let’s take a closer look at how our Scalp Micropigmentation SMP treatments can help after the popular hair transplant procedures Follicular unit extraction (FUE) and Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT).

What are Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) and Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)?

Follicular Unit Transplantation or FUT as it is commonly referred to involves a strip of hair follicles being removed from usually the back or side of your scalp and transplanted into the desired area where the area of thinning hair exists. Hence the other popular name of the ‘strip method’. The FUT procedure can often leave patients with a scar across the area from where the hair follicles have been removed.

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is carried out differently from FUT. The procedure does not require a strip of follicles to be removed. Instead, each individual hair follicle is carefully removed and then placed into tiny entry points which have been created in the affected area. Although this will result in tiny puncture dot scars left on areas of the scalp, the FUE method is perhaps a better fit for most people due to the fact that, unlike the FUT method, there is no linear scar left once the procedure has been completed.

Both of these procedures are fantastic in their own right and your hair transplant specialist will be able to advise you on which option is best suited for you.

Can I cover up my scar left from a hair transplant using Scalp Micropigmentation SMP? Yes (and effectively!).

When it comes to scarring, unfortunately, both methods do inevitably leave a scar, which in many cases will remain visible. The risk of scarring is extremely common when it comes to hair transplants. The length and size of the scar will vary between patients.

Would you like to hear the good news? You have options to conceal your scar and this is where Scalp Micropigmentation comes in. Many of our clients visit our London Scalp Micropigmentation SMP Clinic because they have undergone surgery for a hair transplant and as a result would like treatment that effectively camouflages the appearance of their scar. El Truchan from Scalp Micro Definition is here to make this possible.

Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) can reduce and diminish the shape and size appearance of your scar. It can camouflage your scar into your hairline or existing hair density in order to effectively reduce its appearance. It is an incredibly popular and super effective way to camouflage hair transplant scarring as well as a multitude of other hair loss concerns.

When the scar colour is needing to be covered, we use pigments that imitate the actual skin colour. For example, if your skin colour is darker but you have a white scar - we can colour that white scar to match closely with the surrounding skin colour. Then if that scar is also on the scalp - once healed we can add the microdots impressions of hair follicles to create the appearance of hair growth in that spot.

If your skin is light, we are usually good to go ahead with the hair follicles imitation dots -the SMP to replicate a hair growth impression.

When undergoing FUE or FUT treatment scarring is inevitable with both procedures and this is why many patients opt for Scalp Micropigmentation treatment. Covering the scar doesn’t just change your appearance cosmetically, but it can also change how you feel inside; SMP can give you the boost of self-confidence that you’ve been longing for.
