Frequently asked questions
General FAQSMP - Scalp Micro Pigmentation Treatment Specific Eyebrows Treatment Specific FAQLips Treatment Specific FAQ
What does the treatment involve?
During the consultation, which is part of your treatment day visit, we will discuss your requirements, what you want to achieve, and the result that will best suit you. We take into consideration your lifestyle, image, skin tone, hair, and facial features. Then we select a matching pigment or custom blend pigment colours to match your requirements during this design stage. The actual treatment itself involves gently implanting microscopic particles of pigment into layers of the skin with either a micro or nano needle (Scalp) or blade or shader (eyebrows) or micro or nano needles (eyebrows, eyeliners, lips, scalp, nipple & areolas, scars, beauty spots). SMP treatments are packaged into 2 or 3 visits usually.
Who is it suitable for?
Anyone and everyone for different reasons, the most common ones being:
Scalp Micro Pigmentation (SMP) / Hair Tattoo: Brings back the lost confidence that hair loss or thinning hair could have caused. Allows for low maintenance of the treated areas where fibres or camouflage makeup is no longer required.
Medical Tattoo: Restores the appearance of lost features or skin colour.
Microblading & Permanent Makeup: Saves precious time every morning, gives the face a 'younger' and healthier-looking appearance and, in contrast to traditional makeup, it stays on 24/7 without smudging or the need to reapply.
Plasma Fibroblast: Tightens loose skin and creates a much healthier appearance of the skin texture and colour. Can also remove pigmentation marks, skin tags, and provide non-surgical eyelid lifts.
Microneedling: Reduces and often removes stretch marks, wrinkles/fine lines, scars, and pigmentation marks on the skin.
Will it look natural?
Yes, the healed result will look very natural. You can tailor results to whatever look, colour tone, or strength best suits you. For SMP, there is 5-9 days of visual healing and 2 weeks for the lower layers of skin; sessions can be repeated after 2 weeks. The healing process for other areas takes up to 12 days (visible healing with scabbing) and 6 weeks of under-skin healing. Your Permanent Makeup or Microblading will look stronger and more dramatic for the first 6-12 days.
Will it hurt?
SMP can feel slightly irritating to start, but many clients fall asleep during the treatment. Permanent Cosmetics treatments are far gentler than you might think and topical anaesthetics are applied to the skin before and during the procedure to ensure the most comfortable experience possible. The equipment is refined, quiet, and gentle. Many clients have commented that the treatment is no more painful than having their eyebrows tweezed or plucked. Eyeliners and lips are also pre-numbed.
How long will it last?
This varies due to factors including skin type, products, cosmetics routine, diet, smoking, metabolism, genetics, and environmental factors. Sunbed use and sun exposure affect pigment retention. As a guide:
Scalp: 2-5 years before a new treatment is required.
Permanent Makeup / Microblading: 1-3 years, though refresher colour boosts are recommended every 9-12 months.
How long will the treatment take?
Treatment times vary depending on the detail required. While some treatments may take as little as one hour, you should set aside 2 to 3 hours for your appointment (including consultation time).
How will I look after the treatment?
Treated areas will look darker in colour immediately after the initial session and for the next 6-12 days, but will lighten after that.
Why do I need a consultation on the day of the treatment?
The consultation gives you an opportunity to discuss your treatment plan to determine the change you are looking to make and the end result. Free Virtual and Video Consultations are available upon request via email. In-person consultations are £90 for 30 minutes.
What if I have medical issues?
A full assessment of your medical background will be made prior to the treatment via email pre-screening. While there are some occasions when people are not suitable due to medical matters, this is fairly uncommon.
Are there any risks involved?
As with any invasive procedures, risks can include allergic reactions (we patch test in advance via post), infection, or scarring (when clients don't follow the aftercare). Risks are minimised due to adherence to Health & Safety guidelines, high-quality training, and years of experience.
How quickly will the skin heal?
Surface skin heals between 4-7 days after treatment, and 10-14 days below the surface. After the initial 4-7 days, the healing skin can begin to gently flake off and the treated area will lighten. For Permanent Makeup, it is advised to attend the re-touch appointment (free of charge) to refine and perfect the area.
Do I need to do anything special to look after the treatment whilst it's healing?
Aftercare instructions will be provided together with a special aftercare balm where required.
Do I need to take time off work after my treatment?
Not unless you choose to do so; you should be able to get straight back to work. Note: Driving immediately after eye procedures is not advised.
Is there anything I will need to avoid doing after the treatment?
Avoid applying products discussed during the visit, traditional makeup, or exposing the skin to extreme heat, cold, or moisture. Do not apply certain petroleum-based ointments immediately after.
Scalp: Do not wear tight headwear (hats/wigs) right after the procedure.
Permanent Makeup: Avoid driving immediately following eye procedures. For lips, avoid food/drink touching the area immediately post-procedure. Use a fork and provided sterile straws to avoid touching your lips.
Can I drink alcohol prior to my treatment?
No. You must not drink alcohol 48 hours before or on the day of your treatment as it can affect pigment retention.
Can I have anti-aging injections or cosmetic surgery after my treatment?
This depends on the treatment and location. You will need to take advice from your therapist or surgeon. Please inform me if you are planning any, as these procedures can alter the shape of lips and eyebrows.
Can I donate blood after my treatment?
Current guidelines from the National Blood Service require anyone with SMP or Permanent Cosmetics to wait 4 months after their treatment before giving blood.
Can I have an MRI scan after my treatment?
Yes. Inform the practitioner prior to the scan about your treatment, including when you had it and the location on the body, so they can adjust scan settings.
What if I decide to have plastic surgery at some stage?
No problem. The procedures are done conservatively, respecting the natural lines and features of the scalp and face.
Can I have laser hair removal after a treatment?
You must inform your laser technician prior to the treatment. Laser hair removal can fade and change the shade of your pigment if conducted around the same area.
Can I go on a sunshine holiday immediately after my treatment?
Avoid unprotected or heavy sun exposure on the treated areas for 2 weeks before your visit and 2 weeks after. Continue to be very careful for 4-6 weeks between your final re-touch procedure and your holiday.
Are there different pigment colours?
Yes, there are colours and dilutions to complement every skin tone.
What is your health and safety policy?
The business adheres to government regulations regarding semi-permanent skin colouring businesses and is licensed/registered with the relevant council in accordance with local authority acts.
Can any ethnicities be treated?
Yes, procedures are performed for people of all ethnicities. Selecting the appropriate colour, dilution, and design is critical for a successful outcome.
