Frequently asked questions
General FAQSMP - Scalp Micro Pigmentation Treatment Specific Eyebrows Treatment Specific FAQLips Treatment Specific FAQ
Is the SMP treatment painful?
Some people are more sensitive than others, but in general, it is not too uncomfortable.
How long will the result last?
The effect should last between 2 and 5 years, thereafter a top-up/booster treatment is recommended. Some people might need a small annual colour boost, but the majority carry it well for approximately 2-5 years.
Is the procedure suitable for Alopecia sufferers?
Yes. We can simulate the look/impression of hair on affected areas regardless of length. For Alopecia Areata or Androgenic Alopecia (male/female pattern baldness), we can create an illusion of hair growth or optically reduce the contrast between natural hair and skin.
For Men or for Women?
It is a common misconception that SMP is just for men. Women can also experience medical conditions such as alopecia, thinning hair, or hair loss due to hormonal changes, pregnancy, or hair product damage.
How soon can I have the treatment?
I offer FREE Online Consultations via Email. In-person clinic consultations are £90 for 30 minutes.
How will the area look after the treatment?
You can expect an instant visible hair imitation result, but it will not be strong enough after the 1st session. Expect redness and soreness for a couple of days. Pigment dots will appear darker immediately after. Between the 5th and 10th day, the pigment may “disappear” as it is obscured by new skin cells—this is normal. It will reappear to its true colour within 2-4 weeks.
Is there anything I shouldn't do before or after the Scalp procedure?
Before: No alcohol for 48 hours prior; no hair dyes at least 10 days prior; no Botox or injectables at least 2 weeks prior (contact me to check).
After: No exercise for 5-7 days; no shaving the scalp for 7 days; no washing the scalp for 7 days; avoid chlorinated swimming pools for 1 month. Use sunscreen on sunny days to prevent fading.
What about the shape, design of my hairline?
We work together to design the best hairline shape for your features. Special wax pencils are used to draw the shape; we only proceed once we are both happy with the design.
Do I need to shave my head following the procedure and how often?
For fully or partially bald clients, it is recommended to maintain a freshly-shaved or cropped look (every 2-3 days). You can start shaving 7 days after the treatment. For thinning hair/patches, specific advice is provided at consultation.
Do I need to inform you of other procedures on the area?
Yes, as it may affect the outcome and timescale/allowances of your SMP procedure.
